We are deep into Boston Calling weekend, but we thought we'd highlight one more band! Paper Tigers, made up of Michael Medlock on vocals, Bjarki Guðmundsson on guitar, Matthew Hughes on bass, and Ben “Cutty” Cuthbert on Drums take the Tivoli Audio local stage Sunday. Check out their video for “Goldmine” and keep scrolling to learn about the band.
How did the band come together?
In 2019, Michael put out an ad on Craigslist to start a new band. He received 456 applicants. To decide the finalists, he staged a series of deadly children’s games on a secret island near the South Korean peninsula, only accessible through an underwater cavern. Bjarki, Matthew, and Cutty were the only survivors.
How would you describe your sound?
A structurally chaotic aural interpretation of a drunk dilettante doing an interpretive dance. Also loud, catchy, and dynamic… not unlike an interpretive dance.
What artists would you say are your influences?
Michael: Oasis, Blur, The Strokes, IDLES, Nirvana, Arctic Monkeys
Bjarki: Arctic Monkeys, IDLES, The Strokes, Nirvana, QOTSA, Interpol, Weezer
Matt: The Mars Volta, Circa Survive, Muse
Cutty: Deftones, Manchester Orchestra, Thrice, Phoebe Bridgers
What is your favorite local spot/venue to perform in?
Michael: Ralph’s Rock Diner, O’Brien’s, The Middle East
Bjarki: Midway Cafe
Matt: The Jungle
Cutty: The Jungle and O’Brien’s. Also, our practice space.
What does it mean for you to be one of the artists selected to represent the region at Boston Calling?
It’s a dream come true and nothing we ever imagined we’d get to do. We see it as an opportunity to showcase what we do, and feel a responsibility to represent and highlight the local music scene. It’s made us push ourselves to be better and live up to the grandeur.
What acts are you most looking forward to seeing at Boston Calling?
Michael: The Strokes, Weezer, DJO
Bjarki: Weezer, Modest Mouse, The Strokes, NIN
Matt: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, DJO, Kenny Hoopla, Grandson
Cutty: Kenny Hoopla, Run The Jewels, Charlotte Sands, Oliver Tree
